The site continues to be occupied by the Gillette Company, who has operated it as their European Headquarters and production base for the production of razors and razor blades since the 1930s. However, following an internal review and business re-organisation to improve global and business operational efficiency, Gillette took the decision (in 2003) to relocate (and concentrate) their manufacturing operations within a new facility in Eastern Europe. Since taking the decision to relocate, Gillette has been downscaling their operations at the site and relocating their staff and equipment. All production activity ceased at the site in May 2006 and Gillette intend to completely vacate the site by January 2007.

The Bonnington Group successfully acquired the Gillette Corner site at the end of 2005 after an extensive tendering process. The purchase of the site by the Bonnington Group represents a significant investment and commitment to ensuring both the regeneration and re-use of this strategically important employment site following Gillette’s departure. The vacation of the site by Gillette in 2007 has provided the Bonnington Group with the opportunity to deliver a comprehensive development solution which protects and builds on the historic legacy of this landmark site, whilst generating significant employment opportunities for the local community and providing complimentary business uses directed at serving the wider Golden Mile area. |
